After the Earthquake of 2005, the Government of Pakistan established “Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority” (ERRA) which is an autonomous office, functioning under the auspices of Prime Minister’s Secretariat for post-earthquake damage assessment, reconstruction and rehabilitation of the effected areas. Makro-Habib contacted ERRA with offer of help and on their recommendation took up the task of re-constructing two government primary schools - the only two in the area, one each for Boys and Girls. Both the schools are in Katha Dobandi, Garhi Habibullah, District Mansehra. Both are at a distance of a few meters from each other . Garhi Habibullah has a lush green landscape with soft friendly hills and moderate winter months. Although it can get very cold between August and March, it rarely snows on that altitude. Transportation therefore remains open throughout the year. People of Garhi Habibullah tend orchards, raise cattle, run small businesses and sustain a very basic standard of living typical to that region. A lot of their youth migrate to the south for better prospect, but the women and children and the elderly keep permanent residence in the land. The earthquake damaged 90% of the buildings in Garhi Habibullah. Foreign and local aid agencies put up tent camps for Shelter to the effected families, for make-shift Hospitals and Maternity Wards, Storage for food supplies and later, temporary Schools for the children . Makro-Habib in re-building these schools is obligated to follow the same basic architectural design that the schools had prior to the earthquake, but has made some alterations wherever possible without disturbing the predetermined lay-out. Makro-Habib handed over both schools to the Government in November of 2007 complete with books and stationery according to the requirement of the school administration. |
